The Edge of Icelandic Wilderness: Staying at the ÖÖD Hekla Horizon Mirror Cabin
A Remote Luxury Escape in the Land of Fire and Ice
Tucked away at the foot of Mount Hekla, surrounded by open plains and sweeping views of Iceland’s untouched wilderness, the ÖÖD Hekla Horizon cabin feels like stepping into another world.
I spent two days staying in this beautifully designed mirrored cabin as both a guest and photographer, documenting every angle of the space, its landscape, and the immersive quiet that only Iceland can offer. This stay was more than just a photoshoot it was a visual storytelling experience that embraced solitude, reflection, and slow living.
Architecture That Disappears Into the Land
ÖÖD cabins are known for their minimalist architecture and mirrored exteriors that reflect their natural surroundings. The Hekla Horizon model in particular is a masterclass in balance offering modern, design led interiors while disappearing seamlessly into the volcanic terrain.
The walls of glass make the landscape part of the room. Waking up to a breath taking view of the winding rive, distant peaks, and ever changing Icelandic weather felt surreal.
Inside, the space is compact but intentional. Natural textures, clean lines, and warm lighting create a cozy cocoon in the middle of nowhere. Every inch is considered from the bed facing the horizon to the rainfall shower that makes you feel like you're bathing in the open air. As if it couldn’t get any more luxurious, each cabin has both its own private sauna and hot tub.
What stood out most during the stay was the stillness. No light pollution, no distractions.
At night, the cabin transformed into a warm orange toned haven, I visited in June where the midnight sun is really coming into its own. If you’re lucky, the northern lights even make an appearance here in the winter months.
This level of immersion in nature is rare and something that ÖÖD has nailed through thoughtful placement and design.
Stays like this aren’t just your regular hotel accommodations. They are experiences, and experiences need to be captured with care. For design led properties like ÖÖD, every image tells a part of the story. The hotel photography from this stay is now part of my portfolio and available to support ÖÖD Hotels and partners in showcasing what makes this stay unforgettable.
